Merging Features

Merging Features

Overview

The merge tool allows you to combine or group multiple map objects into one. You may want to do this where there are multiple locations that you want to have a single set of records for.

Types of Merging

The tool allows for two types of merging;
  1. Flatten. Choosing the Flatten option means that multiple features are treated as one, and where there are overlaps, these will be blended together.
  2. Group. Choosing the Group option means that multiple features are treated as one, but their individual geometry remains the same.

Method

To create a multi-object;
  1. Multi-select the objects you want to aggregate. You can do this by selecting the first object as normal by clicking on it on the map. Then for the subsequent ones, hold down the CTRL key whilst clicking.
  2. Click the Merge Features button in the Info panel.
  3. Select Flatten or Group
  4. Select the attribution that you want to retain.
  5. Click Merge

You'll now have multiple objects represented with one set of attributes.

The statistics panel will now show the area / length measurements for the total of all the objects, rather than the individual objects.

Creating Features with a Hole

Using the Flatten option, you can also create features with holes. Here's an example for drawing out this area of grass, excluding the duck pond.
  1. Draw one half of the area
  2. Draw the other half of the area but overlap the first bit slightly
  3. Select both areas
  4. Flatten merge

Limitations

Modifying a multi-object

You can modify the geometry and attribution of a multi-object, but you can't add or remove objects from it.
